2020 US Open champion Dominic Thiem was sidelined for a number of months owing to a right wrist injury. He struggled with form after returning at the Challenger event in Marbella.

The Austrian star didn’t have favorable results after his comeback as he lost seven matches before finally earning a win at a Challenger event in Salzburg against compatriot Filip Misolic. In the following tournament, Thiem defeated the likes of Emil Ruusuvuori and Roberto Bautista Agut en route to the quarterfinals. Thiem was eventually ousted by Sebastian Baez. The former followed it up with a run to the semis at the Swiss Open.

Thiem managed to string together a few promising results on the road to resurgence as he made it to the quarterfinals in the Austrian Open and won the Challenger event in Rennes in September. The 29-year-old reached the semis of the Gijon Open and the European Open before being ousted in front of his home fans at the Vienna Open in the round of 16, following a loss to top seed Daniil Medvedev.

Thiem took to Twitter and announced the end of his season. He wrote:

“Hi all. After the loss at home this week, the official ATP season is over for me.

The past two years were tough, but I’m so glad and thankful it’s going in the right direction.
Without all your support throughout this time, my comeback wouldn’t be possible.”

Thiem, who is a 17-time ATP tour-level title winner, has mentioned that he wants to arrive like a “machine” next year.

What’s next for Dominic Thiem?
