The Raszyn-based Iga Swiatek was the home favorite to win the Poland Open. A triumph in this competition would have given the world’s No. 1 ranked player her first WTA 250 title. However, the 28-year-old Garcia stopped Swiatek’s dream run on clay. The former became the second Frenchwoman to come out victorious against the youngster after Alize Cornet this month.

Swiatek has had a remarkable 2022. She won six back-to-back tournaments – Qatar Open, Indian Wells Masters, Miami Open, Stuttgart Open, Italian Open, and the French Open. She won the Miami Open and the Italian Open without dropping a set. The 21-year-old lost just six sets across the six tournaments she won. Out of her six triumphs, the Italian Open and of course the French Open came on clay. The Italian Open is a WTA 1000 event while French Open is a Grand Slam.

Other than these six title triumphs, Swiatek has won three more titles. Her first championship win came at the 2020 French Open. In 2021, she won the Adelaide International on outdoor hardcourt and the Italian Open. Therefore, a WTA 250 title on clay has eluded the champion player thus far. Her fans won’t be too worried though as the youngster has a lot of time on her hands.
