Why Che Adams to Southampton would be a great move for both sides

Sky Sports has revealed that Birmingham City star Che Adams is a top target for many Premier League and Championship sides, but it’s Southampton who are currently leading the race, with many expecting a move soon. The Saints under new manager Ralph Hasenhuttl have looked a different team, having won four and drawn just twice out of their last eight league games.

This has pushed them out of the relegation zone for now but they still sit four points above the zone in 16th place. That and the fact that star striker Charlie Austin is on his way out (according to the Guardian) is why the Saints need Che Adams.

But the question for the young striker to ask himself is does he need a move to Southampton, especially when he’s banging in goals left, right and centre for Birmingham City in the Championship?

That’s something only the 22-year-old can answer, but all he has to do is take a look at Southampton’s past. The South Coast side are one of the few clubs in the Premier League that gives regular game time to their youngest stars, with the likes of Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, Josh Sims, Sam Gallagher, Jan Bednarek and even Angus Gunn are all below the age of 24.

For Che Adams, this simply means that if he does join Southampton, then in all likelihood he will get a chance to shine and prove himself. But that’s something he has always done, if not for Birmingham City then for Sheffield United. This season Adams has produced 18 goals in 28 appearances, 11 goals in 33 the season before and 13 goals in 40 in his debut season for Birmingham City.

Which shows that Che Adams is not just a scorer of good goals but also a good scorer of goals, something that Southampton have lacked this season. Liverpool loanee Danny Ings does lead their scoring charts with 7 goals but a far off second is Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, James Ward-Prowse and Stuart Armstrong tied with 3 goals apiece.

Both Charlie Austin and Shane Long have combined to score three goals in the Premier League, with Long recently breaking a 279-day goal-scoring duck.

However, with Burnley, Leicester City, Fulham, Wolves and even Huddersfield Town along with seven more Premier League sides interested in a move for Che Adams according to the Mirror, Southampton need to make their move fast and in this window. The Saints have already let Manolo Gabbiadini go and they cannot afford to lose Charlie Austin, without adding another striker to their team-sheet.
