Why Harry Winks would be a good fit for Southampton

According to Hampshire Live, former Tottenham Hotspur and Aston Villa player Alan Hutton is of the opinion that Harry Winks would be a good fit at Southampton. He was speaking about the player ahead of the January transfer window. Leeds are also said to be interested in the Spurs man.

Winks, 24, rose through the ranks of Tottenham’s youth system and was promoted to the club’s senior setup in the summer of 2016. Since then, he has been a regular member of the squad. He was also instrumental in helping his side reach the Champions League finals in 2018/19.

Since making his debut for England in 2017, he has made 8 appearances for his nation so far. Despite struggling with injuries, he returned to Gareth Southgate’s squad for the UEFA Nations League games and is seen as one of the best young talents in the country.

However, he has struggled for regular game time in recent seasons as Jose Mourinho has a huge stock of options in midfield and Winks has been rather average this season. He still remains a part of the team with getting games on a sporadic basis.

Winks can add to Southampton’s midfield quality

With the good start they have made, Southampton should actually be applauded, given how Ralph Hasenhuttl has operated under stringent funds. While they have a decent squad, a couple of additions here and there wouldn’t go amiss. And Midfield is one area they can start with.

Southampton have a rather small contingent of central midfielders in the form of Oriol Romeu, James Ward-Prowse, Will Smallbone and Ibrahima Diallo. An additional midfielder capable of playing in two or three positions would help them a lot.

Harry Winks, who has had to be content with just limited game time this season, can be an option for Southampton. The youngster was a huge breakout star under Mauricio Pochettino but has somewhat plateaued in recent seasons. It could well be due to the influx of new players or change of managers and tactics.

Verdict

Southampton should look to bring Winks in as he would be a good fit there. He is young, energetic and dynamic. Qualities that Hasenhuttl would enjoy working with. He would provide good competition in the midfield ranks and more importantly add to their numbers which are a bit low in the middle.
