Southampton Opinion: Why the Saints should go all out to sign Tom Rogic?

According to a report from the Sydney Morning Herald, Southampton and Leicester City are interested in signing Celtic star, Tom Rogic.

The Australian playmaker, 26, played a crucial role in helping Celtic win the treble ‘Treble’ last season, although he endured an injury-hit 2018/19.

Former Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers, now manager of Leicester City, is considering raiding his former club for Rogic. Southampton, meanwhile, have enjoyed rich success by raiding the Hoops over the years for Victor Wanyama, Virgil van Dijk and Stuart Armstrong and are keen to bring the creative 26-year-old to St. Mary’s.

The Saints have already made their first summer signing in Moussa Djenepo, who joined from Standard Liege last week. Ralph Hasenhuttl will look to sign some more quality players to bolster his squad after a miserable 2018/19.

The south coast club flirted with relegation throughout the campaign and at one point appeared to go down, only for Hasenhuttl to change the club’s fortunes upon his arrival.

The Austrian manager arrived at St. Mary’s Stadium in December following the departure of Mark Hughes and results soon picked up. After helping Southampton survive relegation, the 51-year-old will be hoping to ensure the club does not add to their two consecutive campaigns fighting relegation.

He has shown a keen eye for developing talented young players, but the south coast club will also need some experienced heads coming through the front door this summer.

The Saints struggled for creativity and goals last campaign and that’s exactly why they must beat Leicester City to the signing of Tom Rogic.

A natural no.10 who thrives when playing just off the front, Rogic is a very good passer and distributor of the ball and his versatility means he can play on either of the wide areas. The Australian loves to have the ball at his feet, use his skill-set and trickery to bamboozle defenders and score goals.

He has the burst of acceleration and his propensity to drift into promising areas in the final third and create chances for his teammates has made him one of the dangerous players in the Scottish Premiership.

Adept at linking up with the attackers up front and breaking the opposition’s lines with his highly creative passing, Rogic is not only an expert playmaker but also very much capable of scoring goals from outside the box.

The elegant left-footed ace has all the qualities in his locker to carve open tight defences and win matches single-handedly on his day.

Verdict

All in all, Rogic should really enhance a rather one-paced Hasenhuttl’s attack and it is not difficult to see why his acquisition would be a massive coup for the Saints.
