Why Liverpool should make an effort to sign Aaron Ramsey in January

According to The Metro, Liverpool will resume their interest in Aaron Ramsey in January after failing to persuade the 27-year-old to move to Anfield in the summer.

The 27-year-old Welshman is excited by the prospect of playing under manager Jurgen Klopp and the Reds are leading the race to land one of Arsenal’s longest-serving players (h/t The Metro).

An earlier report by Guardian claimed that talks over a new contract between the Welshman and Arsenal had broken down with the Gunners withdrawing their offer.

Influenced by Mesut Ozil’s increase in wages to £350,000-a-week last season, Ramsey demanded a new contract with improved terms which would match the German’s weekly income but Arsenal weren’t ready to offer him that kind of money (h/t The Guardian).

Ramsey has less than twelve months remaining on his current contract and the 27-year-old will be free to negotiate terms with other clubs regarding a pre-contract agreement. However, the Gunners should look to sell him in January as they face the risk of losing him for nothing next summer.

That leaves Liverpool with two options – they can either discuss a pre-contract agreement with Ramsey in January or complete a cut-price deal for the 27-year-old.

But Liverpool should not delay this because some elite European clubs, including Real Madrid, are likely to come swirling to acquire the signature of the Welshman in January (h/t Express).

Aaron Ramsey has established himself as Arsenal’s first-choice playmaker with Mesut Ozil being shifted to the right by new manager Unai Emery. He has succeeded in taking his game to a new level under Emery’s philosophy and has flourished in his new role.

The 27-year-old has established himself as a potent threat with his vision and his ability to make aggressive runs at the defenders. Ramsey has started six games out of the first seven for Arsenal, averaging 1.6 key passes and 1.1 shots per game. These stats provide further evidence of his emergence as Arsenal’s new playmaker.

And he should be a perfect fit for Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool as well. Not only can the manager slot him into a playmaker’s role behind the likes of Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino but Klopp could also use him as a central midfielder in place of the likes of Naby Keita and James Milner.

Although he is not the best at tracking back and helping the defenders, his tactical brilliance in the midfield will provide adequate cover and competition for the likes of Georginio Wijnaldum, Milner and Jordan Henderson.

An engine and a tactician in the midfield, he can suit Klopp’s high-intensity football that requires players to press higher up the pitch. However, the manager should be looking to build on his newfound success as a playmaker and assign him a more attacking role. Hence, his versatility and dynamism should be resourceful to the Reds and he might emerge as the club’s next No.8.

With Milner on the other side of 30, the Reds need youthful additions to bolster their midfield and Ramsey can bring in both energy and experience to the team. Given that he has plenty of experience on the European front as well, signing the Welshman could help the Reds excel in the Champions League.

That said, Aaron Ramsey could well be the signing that makes Liverpool all the more formidable.
