Sheffield United Opinion: Why the Blades should go all out for Neil Maupay?

According to a report in the Sheffield Star, Sheffield United are considering a move for Brentford star, Neal Maupay.

Over the course of the season, The Frenchman, 22, scored 25 goals in the Championship, on top of eight assists. His displays have caught the attention of Sheffield United, who are preparing for life in the Premier League.

The Blades achieved automatic promotion to the Premier League, alongside Norwich City. Now, Chris Wilder will be looking to improve the squad to give Sheffield United a chance to survive the first season in the top-flight. The 51-year-old will be keen to add firepower to his squad and prepare his team for what will be a tough campaign in England’s top-flight.

Chris Wilder

With former loanees Gary Madine and Scott Hogan returning to their parent clubs earlier this month, Wilder is left with Billy Sharp and David McGoldrick as only recognised centre-forwards at his disposal. Kieran Dowell has also returned to Everton following the expiry of his loan spell, which means there is also space for an attacking midfielder.

Billy Sharp and David McGoldrick were key in helping the Blades achieve Premier League status, but both are on the wrong end of 30. Thus, that itself tells how desperately United need another striker in their ranks to compete with the duo.

Neal Maupay could be that player for Wilder’s side, a striker capable of scoring goals consistently. The Frenchman is ruthless in front of goal, can play in different positions in the attacking third and will give a different verve to United’s attack. He isn’t only about scoring goals, Maupay can also create chances for his teammates by slipping incisive passes in and around the box.

The 22-year-old’s versatility would be a huge bonus for Sheffield United, meaning that he could play alongside Sharp or simply lead the line by himself. The former Nice and Saint-Etienne man should be able to handle the step up with ease and could be a smart, long-term option for Wilder’s side.

Maupay does have the quality and potential to make a huge impact in the top-flight, whilst giving the Blades a big boost to their hopes of survival next season.

Verdict

If Maupay can make the step up from the Championship to the Premier League without any fuss and find the back of the net with great regularity, the Frenchman would represent a massive coup for Sheffield United.
