Originally from Killeen, Texas, he played for both the Denver Pioneers men’s basketball team and the Baylor Bears men’s basketball team. After a successful college career, O’Neale went on to play his first professional season in Germany for MHP Riesen Ludwigsburg, where he averaged 8.1 points and 4.5 rebounds per game. In 2016, he played for the Golden State Warriors Summer League team and later signed with Spanish club Herbalife Gran Canaria for the 2016-2017 season. However, he never played a game for the Lithuanian club Žalgiris Kaunas he signed with next, as he was signed by the Utah Jazz for the 2017-2018 season after playing for the team in the NBA Summer League.
O’Neale made his NBA debut on October 21, 2017, and quickly established himself as a key player for the Jazz. He was signed to a contract extension by the team in January 2020. On June 30, 2022, O’Neale was traded to the Brooklyn Nets in exchange for a 2023 first-round draft pick. Since joining the Nets, O’Neale has continued to impress, registering his first career triple-double on November 17, 2022, in a 109–107 win over the Portland Trail Blazers.
