College Career

Tonyan went to McHenry Community High School East Campus. In both football and basketball, he earned two letters. He set the school record with 5,000 career passing yards as a quarterback and was chosen All-Conference as a junior and senior.

His career ended at his school Indiana State with the most consecutive games with a reception (21) and had the number of receptions, single-season TD receptions (10), and career TD receptions (20). At Minnesota, he had a career-high eight receptions for 90 yards (11.3 average) and three touchdowns. At Western Illinois, he recorded a career-long TD reception of 65 yards. Tonyan had 131 receiving yards, a season-high, on eight receptions (16.4) and two TDs at Southern Illinois.   

Tonyan also got an Honorable mention All-MVFC for the junior season (2015) where he has 40 receptions for 601 yards (15.0 average) and six touchdowns by the end of the season, out of the starting six of the 11 games he was involved in. He completed two passes for 56 yards, in addition, got  10 receptions for over 20 yards… At Purdue, he had four receptions for 74 yards (18.5 average) and a touchdown (Sept. 12) At Illinois State, he recorded nine receptions for 117 yards (13.0 average) and three touchdowns (Oct. 31). After playing QB his freshman season, he switched to WR at sophomore (2014) where he played in 13 games, catching 54 catches for 747 yards on four touchdowns.  

His catches have been ranked No. 10 in the most catches per game category in the MVFC with a 4.2 average. He got 8 catches for 89 yards (11.1 average) and the first receiving touchdown of his career against Liberty (Sept. 27)Tied at a season-high at Western Illinois with eight receptions for a career-high 172 yards (21.5 avg).

NFL career

On May 12, 2017, the Detroit Lions agreed to a three-year, $1.66 million contract with undrafted free agent Tonyan. After signing, he became the tenth football player from Indiana State to join the NFL. He was released prior to the start of the season, but after being added to their practice squad for the final four games, the Packers brought him back for the 2018 season. He took part in the first nine games of the season but only saw one target prior to Week 11 when he caught his first NFL pass, a 54-yard touchdown ball from Aaron Rodgers. He recorded four receptions for 77 receiving yards and one touchdown in the 2018 season.

Tonyan’s exclusive rights were suggested by the Packers in 2019. The Washington Redskins lost 20-15 on December 8, 2019, when Tonyan caught a touchdown pass at a distance of 12 yards. In 2019, he had ten receptions for 100 receiving yards. 

As an exclusive-rights free agent, the Packers re-signed Tonyan on April 24, 2020, giving him a one-year deal to stay in Green Bay. In Week 2’s 42-21 triumph over the Detroit Lions, Tonyan caught an 11-yard touchdown pass on September 20, 2020.

On October 5, 2020, Tonyan helped the Green Bay Packers defeat the Atlanta Falcons 30-16 in a nationally televised Monday Night Football game by catching six passes for 98 yards and three touchdowns. Tonyan had 4 receptions for 22 yards and a touchdown in the NFC Championship game loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, which ended 31-26. 

The Packers selected Tonyan in the second round of the restricted free-agent tender process on March 17, 2021. On May 27, Tonyan executed his $3.4 million tender.
