Carpenter created the Richard Carpenter Trio in 1965 with sister Karen and friend Wes Jacobs. Richard played the piano, Karen played the drums, and Wes played the tuba and bass. Together, the pair had a major success throughout the 70s with such hit singles as “(They Long to Be) Close to You,” “We’ve Only Just Begun,” and “Top of the World.”

Karen Carpenter passed away in 1983. Richard released two solo albums. He has continued to record and also produce documentaries.

Richard and Karen signed to A&M Records in 1969 as the music duo the Carpenters. The Carpenters released their debut studio album, originally called “Offering”. Carpenters’ second album, 1970s “Close to You,” made it to number two on the Billboard 200. “Close to You” received eight Grammy Award nominations, winning two.

The Carpenters released their fifth studio album, “Now & Then,” in 1973. Two years later, they released “Horizon,” which was their first album that failed to crack the top five in the United States. Four albums were also released following Karen’s passing: “Voice of the Heart,” “An Old-Fashioned Christmas,” “Loveliness,” and “As Time Goes By.”

After the passing of Carpenter’s sister, Richard released his debut solo album, “Time,” featuring lead vocals from such artists as Dionne Warwick, Scott Grimes, and Dusty Springfield. Carpenter created one of the album’s tracks, “When Time Was All We Had in homage to his sister.

Carpenter’s next release came in 1989, when he produced, arranged, and performed on the eponymous debut album of Scott Grimes. Later, in 1996, he released “Richard Carpenter: Pianist, Arranger, Composer, Conductor,” which features re-workings of various hit songs by the Carpenters.

Carpenter was named after his father’s younger brother, Richard Lynn Carpenter. Carpenter and his uncle both married a woman named Mary. Richard and his sister were baptized into the United Methodist Church and as children were part of the Methodist Youth Ministry.

Carpenter married his adoptive cousin (no blood relationship) Mary Rudolph in 1984. The couple were dating since the late 1970s. Richard and Mary Carpenter have five children: Kristi Lynn was born on August 17, 1987, Traci Tatum on July 25, 1989, Mindi Karen (named after her late paternal aunt) on July 7, 1992, Collin Paul on July 20, 1994, and Taylor Mary on December 5, 2000.
