Rangers Opinion: Gers should sign Greg Stewart as Ryan Kent replacement

According to the Daily Record, Rangers are weighing up a move for Aberdeen forward Greg Stewart as a potential replacement for Ryan Kent at the end of the season.

Stewart has starred in the Scottish Premiership for Aberdeen this term, claiming 8 goals and 7 assists from 25 appearances and his red-hot form has attracted interest from Ibrox.

The 29-year-old rose to prominence with Cowdenbeath and Dundee as a homegrown talent earlier in his career before earning a move to the Championship with Birmingham City in 2016.

However, he failed to make much of an impact across the border and has spent three consecutive seasons on loan in his homeland ever since.

Meanwhile, Rangers lost out 2-1 to Celtic in the Old Firm derby on Sunday, which has now definitely decided the fate of the Scottish Premiership title. Ryan Kent cancelled out Odsonne Edouard’s first-half opener before James Forrest turned the tables in Celtic’s favour with a late winner. The Gers have looked pretty impressive at times this season under the stewardship of Steven Gerrard but they would need to bring in a few fresh faces to bolster their squad if they are to challenge Celtic for the domestic title next season.

One player who has established himself as one of the best in the division is none other than Ryan Kent. Rangers were one of the favourites to sign him permanently at the end of the season after his heroics on loan from Liverpool but the Gers are likely to find it difficult to hold on to him, with the Reds slapping a 12 million price-tag on the youngster. With star man, Alfredo Morelos also linked with a move away from Ibrox in the summer, Gerrard would certainly need to dip into the transfer window for reinforcements. And Greg Stewart, though not a household name in the country, would be a potentially good signing for Rangers.

The club’s links with Stewart are not expected to create too much noise amongst the fans at Ibrox but one should also keep in mind that the 29-year-old has been in blistering form on his loan spell at Aberdeen. As a homegrown player, Stewart is very much familiar to the style of play prevalent in the Scottish Premiership and the fact that he has considerable experience of playing in Scotland, should make him a useful signing for the Gers. Also, he going to be available on a free transfer, so there’s not a lot of risk involved in it.

Stewart is primarily a centre-forward by trade but he is more than capable of playing out wide on either flank, which should make him a good fit for Rangers. Gerrard currently as Daniel Candeias and Kent as quality options in the wide areas and the departure of the Liverpool loanee would leave a massive void in the attacking third. To go with his obvious pace and flair on the ball, the Stewart can create chances with his accurate crossing from the flanks as well.
