Celtic must consider signing Dominic Iorfa in January

Celtic made a shaky start to the ongoing Scottish Premiership campaign but now, they seem to have steadied their ship to a great extent.

The Hoops have regained their spot at the top of the table and are tied on 26 points to second-placed Hearts with a game in hand. One might think that Brendan Rodgers’ woes are nearly over but with the January transfer window coming up, it is fair to suggest that he will have his work cut out for him pretty soon.

It is glaringly obvious that Celtic need a new striker. Moussa Dembele’s departure over the summer has hit the Scottish giants quite hard.

However, the right-back department also requires strengthening as soon as possible. In Kieran Tierney, Celtic have a reliable and skilled left-back but they cannot say the same for the right-back spot.

In fact, the lack of a quality defender for that role has jeopardized their play to an extent. And hence, the manager must consider signing a new right-back in January.

The likes of Cristian Gamboa and Mikael Lustig have failed to impress and have been far too inconsistent at the back. Furthermore, Lustig’s future at the club continues to be uncertain for the time being.

Dominic Iorfa

Thus, Celtic must turn their attention to the Premier League to look for an answer to their woes. And they might find the same in Wolverhampton Wanderers’ defender Dominic Iorfa. As per Birmingham Mail, Iorfa is looking for an exit in January due to the lack of game time under Nuno Espirito Santo.

A centre-back by trade, Iorfa has excelled as a right-back in recent times and caught the eye with some fantastic displays in that role for Ipswich Town on loan last season.

The youngster is not only a solid defender but is also adept at surging forward. He can track back and stop opponents from moving towards the goal while also having a keen eye for a defence-splitting pass or two. Iorfa’s contributions on both ends of the pitch could be exactly what Celtic have been looking for on the right flank.

With an explosive player like Tierney on the left – and possibly, Iorfa on the right – the Hoops could have a solid foundation going forward. The 23-year-old has struggled to play regularly for Wolves this season and one cannot blame him; Matt Doherty is a difficult player to replace.

However, since he is on the lookout for an exit, Celtic must hesitate to sign him either on loan or permanently once the January window commences.
