Chelsea Opinion: Two ideal Premier League destinations for Olivier Giroud

According to a report from Sky Sports, Chelsea striker Olivier Giroud wants to move back to France when his contract expires at the end of the season after growing frustrated by a lack of playing time under manager Maurizio Sarri.

The Frenchman, 32, has made just see Premier League starts this season. He has fallen behind the on-loan Gonzalo Higuain in the pecking order after the Argentine’s arrival from Juventus in January.

This has resulted in Olivier Giroud getting very less opportunities in the Premier League, although he has been a regular in Europa League where he is the competition’s top-scorer with nine goals in as many games.

The striker, who won the World Cup with France last summer, may have admitted his desire to move back to France but there could be clubs in the Premier League that could hand Giroud an opportunity to continue his career in England.

With that in mind, here are two ideal Premier League destinations for Giroud.

1. West Ham

According to a report from the Daily Mirror, West Ham wanted to sign Giroud last summer and again in January. But Manuel Pellegrini ended up keeping Marko Arnautovic as a move to China failed to materialise.

But come summer, Pellegrini could face a potential burnout of options in the strike department.

Arnautovic, despite penning a new one-year contract extension, could leave if a bigger club comes calling, while Andy Carroll is out of contract in June. Javier Hernandez may stay put after finding his form of late but Lucas Perez could leave West Ham due to lack of opportunities.

That leaves a big hole in the Hammers’ attack and there won’t be a better time for the Londoners to reignite their interest and sign Giroud. The Frenchman could be an ideal replacement for Carroll, whilst having a better fitness record than the English forward.

Also, the 32-year-old won’t cost a single penny for Pellegrini, meaning the Hammers could be able to use their funds in strengthening other areas of the pitch.

2. Everton

Everton have lacked a clinical goal-scorer since the departure of Romelu Lukaku two years ago. Cenk Tosun has failed to live up to the billing since joining from Besiktas in January 2018, leaving an extra burden of scoring regularly on the young shoulders of Dominic Calvert-Lewin this season.

The Toffees manager, Marco Silva, needs to address this problem ahead of the next season. And signing Giroud from Chelsea this summer would certainly be a step in the right direction for the Royal Blues.

Marco Silva

In Giroud, Everton would finally get a focal point to their attack that they have desperately lacked all this campaign. The Frenchman is excellent at link-up play and his ability to hold the ball up would help bring the likes of Gylfi Sigurdsson, Bernard and Richarlison more into play.

Not to forget, Everton would not need to break the bank for the former Arsenal man. All in all, the 32-year-old striker’s signing would represent a coup for Silva’s side.
