Novak Djokovic edges closer to history after reaching the Round of 16 in the Olympics tennis tournament at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics after a win over Jan-Lennard Struff 6-4, 6-3.

The World No. 1 hit 14 aces and broke the German’s service on three occasions on the way to a comfortable straight sets victory. His quest for his first gold is well on course, after winning the first 3 Grand Slams of the year.

“I am full of confidence and motivated to represent Serbia in the best possible way. I am yearning for a medal in Tokyo, hopefully gold, and then I’ll go to New York aiming to complete it all,” said Djokovic after the match.

There has been only one player to win the Golden Slam in tennis history – Steffi Graf in 1988. Djokovic will be the first male player to achieve the feat if he manages to win the tournament in Tokyo, followed by the US Open next month.

He will now face Alejandro Davidovich Fokina after the Spaniard beat Australian John Millman 6-4, 6-7(4), 6-3.

The pair have met only once in their ATP careers, which incidentally came earlier this year. The match was at the ATP 1000 Masters event in Rome, where Djokovic prevailed in straight sets.

Fokina, meanwhile, has been the rising star of this season with impressive victories in the 2021 campaign.

“He (Novak Djokovic) can be beaten too. It is clear that he is chasing the gold medal and the US Open, after the three Grand Slams he has been in, and it will not be easy to handle that pressure.”

However, rain is expected towards the end of the week as temperatures are set to reduce drastically.
