Norwich City Opinion: Canaries should sign Robin Olsen in the summer

According to Calciomercato, Norwich City and Bournemouth are weighing up a move for Roma shot-stopper Robin Olsen in the summer, with reports claiming that the Serie A giants would let the Swedish international leave for a fee of under €15million.

Olsen played for Bunkeflo FF, IFK Klagshamn and Malmö in his native land before joining Danish giants Copenhagen. The 29-year-old signed for Roma last summer on the back of an impressive 2018 FIFA World Cup campaign where he was instrumental in Sweden’s march to the quarterfinals.

Olsen quickly established himself as the first-choice between the sticks for Roma following his arrival at the Italian capital and has made a total of 35 appearances in all competitions for the Serie A giants so far, managing 7 clean sheets in the process.

Both Norwich and Bournemouth can certainly do with a new goalkeeper in the summer. While the Cherries need to replace the underperforming duo of Asmir Begovic and Artur Boruc, Daniel Farke would certainly like to increase competition for places between the sticks at Carrow Road.

To put things into perspective, Olsen’s stocks in Europe has been on the rise since his heroics at the World Cup in Russia and he would be a good fit for both the aforementioned clubs, but Norwich can bag a massive coup if they manage to beat off competition for the coveted shot-stopper.

Tim Krul has enjoyed the role of being the club’s undisputed No.1 with the gloves, and while he has managed 12 clean sheets in the Championship so far, the Dutchman has looked vulnerable at times.

Norwich tied down veteran goalkeeper Michael McGovern to a new deal at Carrow Road but one would hardly expect the 34-year-old to rise up to the challenge in the Premier League.

Krul has got a good taste of top-flight football from his playing days at Newcastle United but Olsen seems like the real deal. Snapping him up might prove to be a massive bargain for the Canaries.

Olsen, 29, is a lanky presence between the sticks with his 6ft. 6 inches frame and has looked in pretty good shape at Roma this season. The Swede has made a total of 85 saves in the Serie A this term, 44 of which have come from inside the penalty area, including 4 from within the six-yard box.

While those stats are good enough evidence of his well-rounded shot-stopping abilities, Olsen is also a good distributor of the ball from goal kicks and is adept at playing with his feet. To add to that, he has plenty of Champions League and Europa League experience in his CV, which should appeal all the more to a club like Norwich.
