Why Norwich City would strike gold by signing Tommaso Pobega

After winning the Championship in the 2018-19 season, Norwich City returned to the Premier League with high hopes. And in the initial few weeks, they showed promise and managed a major upset by getting the better of defending champions Manchester City. But 14 games down, they find themselves languishing 19th in the table.

Daniel Farke’s side has been plagued by injuries and inconsistency. Star striker Teemu Pukki, who scored goals for fun in August, is experiencing a barren spell in front of the goal. The Canaries were on a 7-game winless streak until they put two past Everton at Goodison Park.

Norwich City are monitoring AC Milan midfielder Tommaso Pobega, with the highly-rated Italian labelled ‘the new Nemanja Matic’, as per claims from Italian website Calciomercato (h/t Sky Sports).

They have managed just 3 wins in 14 games and are in danger of getting relegated in their first season back in the Premier League. In addition, they have conceded a whopping 30 goals, the second-highest in the English top tier.

Norwich have a fine record when it comes to unearthing new talents. The likes of Onel Hernandez, Emi Buendia and Marco Stiepermann were all snapped up by different clubs. And reports suggest that the 20-year old Pobega could be the latest addition to Farke’s squad.

Pobega joined AC Milan six years ago back in 2013 and spent last season on loan at Ternana Calcio in the Serie C, making 32 appearances for them.

The 6ft-2inch powerhouse then completed a move in July to Pordenone FC in the Serie B. The midfielder has been the driving force for his team and has contributed 4 goals and 3 assists, helping his club reach the third spot in the table.

Pordenone signed Pobega on a season-long loan with an option to buy but AC Milan have inserted a buyback clause which offers protection, provided he develops into an exciting asset (h/t Sky Sports).

Injuries to first-team players have resulted in Farke deploying Ibrahim Amadou in the centre of the park. The Frenchman has managed to do a decent job so far.

Tomasso Pobega, with his size and rangy stride, would be an ideal foil to govern the midfield which tends to go to sleep and often leak goals. Pordenone FC, however, have the option to make his loan deal a permanent one if the Italian continues his rich vein of form.

 Verdict

Tomasso Pobega has been instrumental in Pordenone FC’s success in the Serie B, contributing with goals and assists from the midfield. Norwich City, who seem to be having troubles at both ends, would strike gold if they manage to get hold of the Italian midfielder.
