Norwich City Opinion: Why the Canaries should go for Filip Krovinovic?

According to a report from Portuguese outlet O Jogo, newly-promoted Norwich City are linked with a loan move for Benfica attacking midfielder Filip Krovinovic.

Krovinovic, 23, who joined Benfica from Rio Ave in 2017, played only 12 games across all competitions, missing most of last season due to an ACL injury. After an injury-hit campaign, Benfica want game time for the Croatian Under-21 international and are willing to loan him out this summer.

Vitoria Guimaraes and Hajduk Split are both interested in the midfielder, but Norwich are in pole position at this current moment in time, the report adds.

The Canaries secured promotion back to the top-flight last season as they won the Championship title. They have made just two new additions since winning promotion in May, snapping up Patrick Roberts on a temporary deal from Premier League champions Manchester City and young Daniel Adshead from Rochdale.

Daniel Farke will need to make more additions if he is to survive the first season back amongst the big boys. Norwich not only require more quality but also depth in the squad but having allocated limited funds, Farke needs to make the most use of the loan market. Competing with the cash-rich top-flight teams is difficult, so the German tactician has to astutely recruit over the summer.

The Norfolk club has done some really smart transfer dealings in recent times and Farke must continue that trend with the addition of Filip Krovinovic. The former Croatia Under-21 international may not be a household name for the Carrow Road faithful, but he is a product from the famed NK Zagreb academy and has done very well ever since arriving in Portugal back in 2015.

The 23-year-old is a creative playmaker, who can also play as a second- striker or in a deeper midfield role. But he thrives playing behind the centre-forward as it allows him the space to create opportunities and link the play with midfield and attack. Noted for his dribbling skills and trickery, Krovinovic has all the attributes to terrorise the defenders, with his ability to finish off chances making him a potent threat in the final third.

Farke has Marco Stiepermann, who had an impressive year during Norwich’s promotion campaign, as the only natural no.10 in his squad. So, signing a player like Krovinovic would be ideal to compete with Stiepermann in the Premier League.

Verdict

The arrival of Patrick Roberts will boost Norwich’s attacking options but Krovinovic could add that bit of unpredictability and X-factor to Farke’s forward line if he manages to hit the ground running in the Premier League.
