Why Newcastle United are doing the right thing by handing Javier Manquillo a new deal

Newcastle United are confident of holding on to Spanish full-back Javier Manquillo with a new deal according to The Telegraph.

The right-back has been with the club since the start of the 2017/18 season, having signed from Spanish giants Atletico Madrid. He has largely been a regular in the first-team. The Spanish player’s contract expires this summer and Newcastle are seemingly keen to retain his services.

Injuries and rotation of players match after match to have seen Manquillo’s game time reduce this season. The right-back has made 15 appearances so far for the Magpies in the Premier League this season, contributing with a solitary assist.

Newcastle making the right decision by offering Manquillo a new deal?

Manquillo has had a decent time with the Magpies if not for lesser number of games in comparison to last season. The player so far has made 61 appearances for the club, assisting five goals.

The 26-year-old has always been a good asset for the Magpies and has shown his versatility on numerous occasions, featuring on the left-side of the defence, as well as a wing-back. This season alone, Manquillo has played 5 games on the right-side of midfield and 11 at right-back position, giving the manager options.

The flexibility to shift to different roles is an asset in itself and makes him a great addition to have.In addition, Manquillo has technical skills to play in both positions and has shown that in his appearances for the club.

Newcastle are going through a time of uncertainty as there is no clarification on the takeover and have left a limbo among members at the club. The Magpies currently sit 13th in the Premier League table with 39 points. They are seemingly safe from the threat of relegation.

Manquillo offers manager Bruce added options, as the player fits both in as a right-back and in the right-midfield role. Additionally, he can slot in at left-back as well. His versatility and experience in the Premier League make him a valuable player for the team. Thus, Newcastle offering the Spaniard a new deal than letting him leave for free is the right decision.
