The “LeBron James of soccer” trended on the Internet after USMNT star Christian Pulisic scored a winner against Iran in the FIFA World Cup to ensure progress to the knockout stage.
The United States of America qualified for the knockout stage of the FIFA World Cup after they defeated Iran 1-0 on Tuesday night, courtesy of a Christian Pulisic winner.
After a 1-1 draw against Wales in their first game followed by a hard-fought goalless draw against a stacked England side in their second game, the United States of America went up against a strong Iran side looking for a win to help them qualify into the knockout stage. And a goal from Chelsea star Christian Pulisic did help the USMNT register a 1-0 win to progress.
The Chelsea star scored from close range towards the end of the first half to give the USMNT a much-needed lead, and they held it out until the final whistle to qualify from second place in their group alongside England. Naturally, the final whistle meant that Pulisic was trending courtesy of his winner – along with his famous nickname of the “LeBron James of soccer”.
Why is Christian Pulisic known as the “LeBron James of soccer”?
Christian Pulisic is known as the “LeBron James of soccer” because of an episode of the television show Pawn Stars.
The unlikely comparison came in an episode of American reality television show Pawn Stars which aired last year, when a fan brought a Chelsea jersey signed by Christian Pulisic to one of the show’s protagonists Richard Corey Harrison in order to sell it. In order to sell it to the reputed collector for a significant sum of $1,500, the fan described the Chelsea star as the “LeBron James of soccer” – a description that instantly went viral on social media.
