As a true freshman, Sanders played only sporadically in place of Saquon Barkley.

This season, he played on special teams mostly. Sanders established the school record for most kicks returned in a season while returning kicks for Penn State (33). Averaging 20.8 yards per return, he is also second on the program’s list of most kick return yards in a season (688).

Sanders received the 2018 Red Worrell Award, given to the offensive player throughout spring practice who most exhibited exceptional conduct, loyalty, attention, attitude, and improvement.

Sanders has designated Penn State’s starting running back when Barkley left the school after the 2017 campaign.

In the 2018 campaign, Sanders started 13 out of 13 games. He ran the ball 19 times for 91 yards and two touchdowns against an Appalachian State on September 1 in his junior season debut. In overtime, a game-winning touchdown of 4 yards was also scored. He was selected as the offensive player of the week by the coaching staff because of his performance. On September 21, Sanders played in one of the year’s most memorable games against Illinois. On 22 carries, he carried for a career-high 200 yards. He also had a career-high three rushing touchdowns when the game was over. He then received the Big Ten Co-Offensive Player of the Week award.

For the most rushing yards by a rookie and the most all-purpose yards by a rookie in franchise history, respectively, Sanders overtook LeSean McCoy and DeSean Jackson during the game.   Sanders gained 79 yards and a score on 20 carries while also catching five passes for 77 yards in Week 16’s game against the Dallas Cowboys.   Along with 50 receptions for 509 receiving yards and three receiving touchdowns, he finished his first season with 818 rushing yards and three rushing scores.

Sanders ran 14 times for 69 yards against the Seattle Seahawks in the NFC Wild Card Round, but the team lost 17-9.

Sanders’ hamstring injury prevented him from playing in the opening game of the 2020 regular season. He made a comeback in Week 2 and played his first game of the year against the Los Angeles Rams. Sanders accumulated 131 scrimmage yards and a rushing touchdown in the 37-19 defeat.   In Week 5’s 38-29 defeat to his hometown Pittsburgh Steelers, Sanders rushed for 80 yards and two touchdowns, including one of 74 yards.   He carried the ball nine times for 118 yards in Week 6’s game against the Baltimore Ravens.   He recorded fourteen carries for 115 yards and two touchdowns in Week 14’s 24-21 victory over the New Orleans Saints, including a career-long 82-yard score. For Sanders, the 2021 campaign was a bit of a mixed bag. Sanders was initially the team’s featured running back, but as the offense prioritized passing the ball more, he saw more time on the sidelines. Sanders had a combined total of 57 carries for 270 yards and 0 touchdowns over the first 6 games. Sanders strained his ankle in the team’s game against the Las Vegas Raiders in week seven.   Sanders was sidelined for three weeks because of this injury. He came back in time for the team’s matchup with the New Orleans Saints in week 11. In the week 13 game against the New York Jets, Sanders resumed a significant role, carrying the ball a season-high 24 times for 120 yards. Sanders ran for 131 yards on 18 attempts in the 15th game of the season against the Washington Football Team. Sanders’ winning streak ended during the Eagles’ week 16 game against the New York Giants when he fractured a hand bone and was forced to miss the final two regular-season games.  All things considered, Sanders has 137 carries for 754 yards and 0 touchdowns in 2021.
