College

Thybulle chose the University of Washington in Seattle because of his friendship with Huskies head coach Lorenzo Romar. As a true freshman in 2015-16, he started all 34 games and averaged 6.2 points, 3.2 rebounds, and 1.6 assists in 24.1 minutes per game.

After his coach left, Thybulle considered leaving the program. However, after meeting with new coach Mike Hopkins, he returned for 2017-18. Former Syracuse assistant under Jim Boeheim for 22 years sold him on the Orange’s acclaimed 2-3 zone defense, which he planned to implement at Washington.

Thybulle had 17 points, six steals, and five blocks in a 64-55 home win over Colorado in 2018-19 helping the Huskies win a share of the Pac-12 regular season championship and averaged 13.5 points, 6.0 steals, 4.5 blocks, and 5.0 rebounds over the week including a victory over Utah earlier in the week to win Pac-12 Player of the Week for the first time in his career.

Thybulle won the Lefty Driesell Award and the Naismith Defensive Player of the Year as the best defensive player in the country. He was also named first-team All-Pac-12, making him only the second player in Pac-12 history to do so twice.

In addition, Thybulle became the first Pac-12 player to have two seasons with 100 or more steals by surpassing Gary Payton’s 331 career steal total. He also equaled Chris Welp’s career high of 186 blocks, making him the only Huskies player to finish among the top 10 in both categories.

Professional Career

Prior to the 2019 NBA Draft, the Philadelphia 76ers had Thybulle on their radar. They were looking for someone who could contribute right away to their pursuit of a championship after losing to the Toronto Raptors in the second round of the playoffs. Thybulle was asked to quit trying out for other organisations with the promise that the 76ers would use their No. 24 overall pick in the first round to draft him. They acquired his draft rights from the Boston Celtics in a trade for Philadelphia’s 24th and 33rd selections, thereby moving up to No. 20 to choose him.

On April 10, 2022, it was revealed that Thybulle had not been fully vaccinated against COVID-19. As a result, he was ineligible to play in Canada during the 76ers’ first-round NBA playoff game against the Toronto Raptors. “Yeah, I’m not fully vaccinated,” he told Rich Hofmann of The Athletic. “I made this decision a long time ago.” I gave a lot of thought to what I would say here. Essentially, I made this decision thinking that I could keep it to myself, that I could keep it private, but people will always wonder why.
