Jones grew up in DeSoto, Texas, and did not begin playing basketball until his senior year of high school, when he attended Triple A Academy in Dallas, Texas.
Jones attended Connors State College for his freshman year. In his only season with the Cowboys, he averaged 15.5 points, 6.9 rebounds, and 2.5 assists per game. Jones chose Arkansas over offers from BYU and Washington to transfer after the season.
Jones came into his junior year as the team’s leading returning rebounder and second leading scorer. Also Jones was named Southeastern Conference (SEC) Player of the Week after scoring 32 points, grabbing seven rebounds, and stealing five times in a 91-43 victory over Rice.
