Mark Andrews Early Life & Education

Mark Andrews was born to Paul and Martha Andrews in Scottsdale, Arizona. His mother is a real estate agent, while his father is a urologist. He has a sister and three brothers. Andrews was given a Type 1 diabetes diagnosis when he was nine years old, but the condition has not interfered with him throughout his professional life.

Andrews attended Scottsdale, Arizona’s Desert Mountain High School. He was a wide receiver in high school, recording 1,122 yards and 17 touchdowns on 68 receptions as a senior, 1,494 yards and 21 touchdowns on 81 receptions as a junior, and 1,058 yards 10 touchdowns on 58 receptions as a sophomore. Kyle Allen was his quarterback in high school. Before Kade Warner, son of Kurt Warner broke his record, he owned the Arizona high school record for career receptions. To play college football, Andrews committed to the University of Oklahoma.

At Oklahoma, Andrews converted from wide receiver to tight end. He participated in all 13 games with one start in 2015 after redshirting his debut season in 2014 and finished with 19 receptions for 318 yards and seven touchdowns. Andrews started 11 of the 13 games he played in 2016 and hauled in 31 passes for 489 yards and seven scores.

He received the John Mackey Award in 2017. In early January 2018, it was revealed that Andrews would miss his senior year at Oklahoma in favor of the 2018 NFL Draft. With the sixth-most touchdown receptions (22) of any receiver during the course of his three years at Oklahoma, Andrews also had the most receiving yards (1,765) of any tight end.

In the third round (86th overall) of the 2018 NFL Draft, the Baltimore Ravens picked Andrews. Andrews was the second tight end selected by the Ravens in the 2018 NFL Draft, behind Hayden Hurst (25th overall). 

Andrews had competition from Maxx Williams, Nick Boyle, and Hayden Hurst for the starting tight end position during training camp. According to head coach John Harbaugh, Andrews will begin the regular season as the fourth tight end, trailing Hurst, Williams, and Boyle.

Andrews made his NFL debut in the 47-3 victory over the Buffalo Bills in the season opener. He had three receptions for 31 yards. In the 23-34 loss against the Cincinnati Bengals on September 13, Andrews scored the first touchdown of his football career.

2019 

Andrews had eight receptions for 108 yards and one score in the Ravens’ 59-10 victory over the Miami Dolphins in Week 1. Andrews caught eight catches for 112 yards and one touchdown as the Ravens defeated the Arizona Cardinals 23-17 in Week 2 thanks to his performance. Andrews caught six passes for 93 yards and two touchdowns in Week 16’s 31-15 victory over the Cleveland Browns. Overall, Andrews had 64 receptions for 852 receiving yards and 10 receiving touchdowns as the 2019 season came to a close. His ten receiving touchdowns were the most in the league among tight ends and tied for second overall with Cooper Kupp.

2020 

In the Ravens’ 38-6 victory over the Cleveland Browns, Andrews scored two receiving touchdowns on five receptions for 58 yards. Andrews grabbed three of his eight targets in Week 3’s 20-34 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs while missing a possible touchdown catch in the end zone. The following week, Andrews bounced back in a 31-17 victory over the Washington Football Team, catching three passes for 57 yards and two touchdowns. Andrews had five receptions for 96 yards and a score in Week 11’s 24-30 overtime loss against the Tennessee Titans. On November 30, 2020, the team put him on the reserve/COVID-19 list. On December 9, the team activated him. Andrews finished the 2020 season with 58 receptions, 701 receiving yards, and seven receiving touchdowns.

2021

In 2021, Andrews defeats the Los Angeles Chargers with a touchdown. Andrews and the Ravens agreed to a four-year, $56 million deal on September 6, 2021, with $37.6 million of that amount guaranteed. In a 19-17 comeback victory in Week 3 vs. the Detroit Lions, Andrews had five receptions for 109 yards. Andrews recorded 100 yards for the first time since Week 2 of the current campaign.

In Week 5’s matchup with the Indianapolis Colts, Andrews received 11 of 13 targets for 147 yards (both career highs) and two touchdowns, in addition to two grabs for two-point conversions. The Ravens would come back to win, 31-25 in overtime. In the Week 14 loss to the Cleveland Browns (22-24), Andrews had 11 receptions for 115 yards and a score. Additionally, Andrews was selected for his second Pro Bowl.
