Manchester City urged to sign Wesley Fofana – One for the future?

According to Leicester Mercury, former Manchester City forward Rodney Marsh believes that his former club should sign Wesley Fofana. He was of the belief that Fofana is worth twice the amount Leicester paid for him. He tweeted out that the Leicester man was worth £75million and followed it up with another that City should bid that amount and add John Stones to it.

Wesley Fofana is a 19-year-old French centre-back who plays for Leicester City. He started his youth career at Repos Vitrolles in 2006. Various spells followed at Bassin Minier (2008), Pennes Mirabeau (2011), Bel Air (2011) and finally settled at St. Etienne in 2015.

He played the next few seasons for the youth sides before being promoted to the senior team last season. In total, he played 29 games and scored 2 goals (source – Transfermarkt). Leicester signed him ahead of this season for a huge transfer fee.

However, he has settled in well at the King Power Stadium, featuring in 7 games for the Foxes so far. Fofana chose to play for France, his country of birth, but he also had the choice of playing for Ivory Coast. He is currently a part of the French U-21 side and has been called up for the UEFA U-21 qualifiers.

Fofana could be one for the future at City

Manchester City recently spent quite a lot of money on Ruben Dias and Nathan Ake to shore up their defence. This was a direct consequence of an underwhelming last season where injury issues hampered their chances of silverware. Aymeric Laporte’s injury issues resulted in Fernandinho playing at centre-back as City had to take a backseat in the league.

They made sure nothing like that happens this season, with the purchases of Dias and Ake. While City did allow Nicolas Otamendi to leave, they currently have a good crop of players at centre-back.

However, City should listen to Rodney Marsh’s advice and try to sign Fofana. The youngster has taken to the team like duck to water and already looks like a solid piece of investment. Since his arrival, he has missed only one match and Leicester have won all but one game in which he has played.

Despite the tender age, Fofana looks like a player mature beyond his years. City my not need him now but he could be one for the future. Right-footed but capable of playing on both sides, Fofana should be an option City look into in the near future.
