Why Manchester United should make a move for Jose Gimenez?

Manchester United are still unbeaten in the Premier League since Ole Gunnar Solskjaer took over from Jose Mourinho last December. The Norwegian has been a revelation, with his impact being more than even the most optimistic Manchester United fan could have hoped for.

A 12-match unbeaten run in the Premier League has taken the Red Devils back into the top four. Solskjaer’s team are now in pole position to qualify for next season’s Champions League. The 46-year-old has displayed fantastic managerial skills since taking the reins at the club but if he gets the full-time job, there will be a lot to do in the summer if he’s to make United worthy title challengers next season.

One of the areas United should strengthen in the summer transfer window is the defence, which has lacked any stability this season although things have improved to a certain extent under Solskjaer. Yet, there is a lot of room for development and a defender to partner Victor Lindelof is a must ahead of the 2019/20 campaign.

Lindelof’s transformation from error-prone defender to consistent stalwart has been one of the key improvements at United after Mourinho’s departure. The 24-year-old has started 14 of the 16 matches for which Solskjaer has been in charge and is beginning to look like the defender United fans had been hoping to see.

However, the Swede has lacked a reliable partner in central defence, with the likes of Eric Bailly, Phil Jones and Chris Smalling yet to fully convince. That’s one of the prime reasons why the Reds need a quality centre-half and Solskjaer should make a summer swoop for Atletico Madrid star, Jose Gimenez.

Jose Gimenez, 24, is one of the best out and out defenders in the game, and his performances for Atletico Madrid and Uruguay over the past few years have been right up there with the very best. He is an archetypal South American defender, known for strength, power, energy, aerial ability and composure on the ball.

A technically gifted centre-back, the Uruguayan is a smooth operator, able to play out of the back with his excellent passing range and can hold his own against physical strikers. Despite not being the tallest of defenders, Gimenez has a great leap that makes him a constant threat in the opposition box during set-pieces.

Although United have looked more compact and organised under Solskjaer, a player like Jimenez would certainly help to tighten up the screws and adding some much-needed physicality to the defence. The Uruguay international ticks all the boxes for a complete centre-back and the Red Devils must break the bank to sign him this summer.
