Manchester United Opinion: Why the Red Devils should sign Reece James?

Manchester United are monitoring the progress of Chelsea youngster Reece James, who is currently on loan at Wigan Athletic, report the Daily Mail.

Despite Wigan’s struggles in the Championship, Reece James has is having a great first season as a professional and his performances haven’t gone unnoticed. The teenager has appeared 44 times for Wigan in 2018-19 and was named in the Championship Team of the Season.

Manchester United are among the Premier League clubs seem to be interested in the 19-year-old full-back, who is valued at £15 million by Chelsea, adds the report.

Reece James

United’s priority has to be strengthening the backline, which has conceded a staggering 50 goals this season, with 3 games still to be played. While a centre-back is already on the agenda, Solskjaer needs to bring in a right-back as well, as club captain Antonio Valencia is set to leave Old Trafford when his contract expires at the end of the season.

Due to Valencia’s injury problems, Solskjaer has used Ashley Young at right-back but the 33-year-old winger turned full-back is past his prime. Diogo Dalot has shown flashes of promise but he is still a long way away from being a regular starter at the club.

Reece James could be a solid addition to the United backline. The 19-year-old, who was named Chelsea’s Academy Player of the Year last season, has massively impressed in Wigan colours in the Championship. Predominantly a right-back, Wigan manager Paul Cook has used him in the midfield of late and the Chelsea loanee has performed admirably well.

Fast developing with Championship experience, James is a flying full-back, who is blessed with raw pace, power, energy and agility. He is a decent passer of the ball but what stands out is his ability to read the game in crucial situations and intercept play by timing his tackles to perfection.

The young Englishman does have the talent and skill to star in the Premier League and Solskjaer could be the right man to take his game to the next level.

Verdict

An aggressive, tenacious and powerful customer, Reece James would be a top fit at Old Trafford. He would not only strengthen United’s backline but also bring a much-needed competition for Dalot at right-back.

However, it remains to be seen if Chelsea let him go in the summer, as they have been handed a two-window transfer ban by Fifa.
