Man United Opinion: Red Devils should move for Wissam Ben Yedder

According to the Sun, Man United are weighing up a move for Sevilla striker Wissam Ben Yedder in a bid to add more firepower to their attack in the summer.

The 28-year-old Frenchman has been linked with Arsenal and Spurs in recent years but a move to Old Trafford now seems more likely to materialize. (h/t Sun)

Ben Yedder is currently enjoying his most prolific season at Sevilla, having racked up an incredible tally of 28 goals and 9 assists from 45 appearances in all competitions. An immigrant from Tunisia, Ben Yedder honed his skills playing Futsal on the streets of Paris before rising to prominence in Ligue 1 with Toulouse.

He hit the 15-goal mark in the French top flight for four successive seasons and was snapped up by Sevilla in the summer of 2016 as a bona-fide goalscorer.

Current in the peak years of his career as a centre-forward, Ben Yedder boasts of an eye-catching tally for Sevilla, having amassed 68 goals and 20 assists from 130 appearances for the Spanish outfit in all competitions.

To add to that, he has a magnificent record in European competitions as well, having scored 18 goals from 22 appearances in the main stages of Europa League and Champions League combined.

Standing at 5ft.7 inches with a diminutive frame, Ben Yedder is neither a physically imposing striker, nor is he capable of stamping his authority with his aerial ability inside the box.

However, he makes up for it with his superb technical abilities and tactical intelligence. The 28-year-old not only boasts of quick feet and excellent close control but his wonderful shooting technique inside the penalty area also makes him a genuine threat.

It is largely due to his tactical prowess and good vision that he has also been used in a No.10 role as an auxiliary striker, with his penchant for creating chances with key passes and delightful through balls adding another dimension to his game.

A fast and agile striker with a good turn of pace and plenty of flair and trickery on the ball, Ben Yedder can be very deceptive with his movement inside the box. He has a wonderful eye for goal and has already proven his worth as a clinical finisher at the highest level.

To put things into perspective, Wissam Ben Yedder is one of the most underrated strikers in Europe currently due to his short stature and Man United can pull off a shrewd move by luring him to Old Trafford in the summer.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer should look to bring in a few fresh faces at the club. While reinforcements at right-back, central midfield and left-wing are likely to be high on his wishlist, the Norwegian should also invest in a new striker to increase competition for places.

The change in philosophy to a more attacking and free-flowing one at Old Trafford since the departure of Jose Mourinho has seen strikers Romelu Lukaku and Marcus Rashford hit top gear.

Anthony Martial has continued his good work but the Red Devils need to find an alternative to Alexis Sanchez. The Chilean has struggled for form and fitness ever since his switch from Arsenal last winter and United can certainly do without his huge wages.

Ben Yedder’s versatility of being able to play as a centre-forward and also in a No.10 role would give him a good chance of competing with Lukaku, Rashford and Martial for a spot up front.

Also, given that he is a creative and mobile presence in the final third, Solskjaer can also look at him as an upgrade on someone like Jesse Lingard. United are likely to lose the services of Juan Mata for free come the end of the season, which further justifies the club’s interest in Ben Yedder as a prolific goalscorer and a tactically-versatile attacker.

The Frenchman is currently firing all guns blazing in the La Liga and Sevilla are unlikely to let him go on the cheap. However, the acquisition of Ben Yedder might help United improve massively in the final third next season as they look to build a squad capable of challenging for the Premier League title.
