Why Manchester City must hand Sergio Aguero a new contract

Star striker Sergio Aguero could be in line for a new one-year contract at Manchester City, according to the Mirror.

The 32-year-old Argentinian is currently contracted until 202. He was expected to leave for his boyhood club Independiente once the deal expired. But Manchester City are wanting to propose a year’s extension. (h/t Mirror)

The Argentine stalwart started his career with Independiente’s youth system and moved to Spain with Atletico Madrid in the summer of 2006 where he came to the limelight. In five years with the Spanish outfit, he racked up 100 goals before joining Manchester City in the summer of 2011.

Handing Aguero a new deal the right move for Manchester City?

Aguero, over the last nine years, has gone on to establish himself as one of the best strikers in the game. The 32-year-old has been key for Manchester City in winning several trophies including four Premier League titles.

Aguero has found the net 254 times across all competitions for the Cityzens and is the club’s all-time leading goalscorer. He stands as the fourth-highest goal-getter in the Premier League, having plundered 180 goals till date.

In 2019/20, the Argentinian netted 23 goals in 32 matches across all competitions, before his season came to an end due to a knee injury.

For Manchester City they won’t consider it as their best season as they lost out to Liverpool in the Premier League title race. But, Aguero continued his top-notch form staying as the club’s top goalscorer for sixth season straight.

Despite turning 32, nothing has stopped the City forward in his merry goalscoring ways. This is reason enough for Manchester City to hold onto the player.

Aguero has brilliantly led the front line for almost a decade now and his stay will be beneficial for the club. Furthermore, in David Silva, Manchester City are already set to lose one of their senior figures this summer. And losing Aguero in quick succession as well wouldn’t bode well for the club.

Verdict

Aguero is by far one of City’s greatest striker and at 32, the Argentine international has still got that energy in him. Therefore, they should do everything possible to keep the striker at Etihad for the next couple of seasons.
