Madrid Open 2023: Badosa/Mattek-Sands vs Haddad Maia/Azarenka – Preview, Predictions, Head to head and Stats

published

The Spanish-American duo of Badosa and Mattek-Sands will take on Haddad Maia and Azarenka in the quarter-finals of women’s doubles at the Madrid Open

Badosa and Mattek-Sands are a relatively new doubles pairing but they have certainly been impressive as a duo at the Madrid Open. Badosa is an established singles star but she has adapted to the demands of doubles pretty well.

The pair came back from a set down to win their opening encounter against the Czech duo of Linda and Brenda Fruhvirtova. They caused a major upset in their next round, getting the better of 8th seeded Chinese duo Xu and Yang. Badosa and Mattek-Sands will be high on confidence after two commendable victories but there is certainly no room for complacency ahead of their next encounter.

Haddad Maia and Victoria Azarenka’s form coming into the match at Madrid Open

Haddad Maia and Azarenka are not regular doubles partners and they have formed a makeshift pairing for the Madrid Open. While both of them are established singles players, they do not have enough experience of playing together. Despite the barriers, the duo have done well to reach the quarter-finals stage.

They began their campaign with a bang, registering an incredible victory against third seeds Schuurs and Krawczyk. It was an intense match which went down to the third set tie-breaker with Haddad Maia and Azarenka eventually winning 6-2, 3-6, 10-7. They got lucky in their second round and received a walkover without having to take the court after their opponents McNally and Kalinskaya withdrew due to injury. They are coming into this encounter after some much needed rest and it remains to be seen if the extra off day will work as an advantage for the pair.

Head to Head and Predictions

Badosa/Mattek-Sands and Haddad Maia/Azarenka have never played each other before on the WTA tour. Although all of them are experienced singles and doubles players, they haven’t faced each other as this particular doubles pair. Both the teams are very close to each other in terms of experience and form, making it difficult to predict the outcome of this match. We are expecting an intense contest with Badosa and Mattek-Sands eventually edging out their opponents in three sets.
