American football defensive tackle Leonard Austin Williams was born on June 20, 1994. He now plays for the New York Giants, which is a member of the National Football League (NFL). In the 2015 NFL Draft, the New York Jets selected him as the sixth overall choice in the first round. This placed him sixth overall in the draft. He attended USC during his college football career.

In early life, Williams received his secondary education at Mainland High School in Daytona Beach, Florida, where he took part in the sports of football and track and field. It was thanks to his 103 tackles and 10.5 sacks that Mainland High School could advance all the way to the semi-finals of the FHSAA 6A state championship, where they were ultimately defeated by Miami Central. However, in August 2012, the loss was reversed since Miami Central was forced to lose the entirety of its season because of a transfer infraction.

Williams played defensive linesman as a true freshman in 2012 and started nine of the team’s 13 games. He finished the season with 64 tackles, eight sacks, and an interception. He was honored as the best defensive rookie in the Pac-12 conference. In 2013, Williams was shifted from tackle to defensive end after having previously held the tackle position. Williams was selected for the first-team All-Pac-12 and was awarded an All-American by ESPN because of his performance in which he recorded 74 tackles and six sacks. In 2014, he was a junior and recorded 80 tackles besides seven sacks. He received the Most Valuable Player award for the squad, was selected to the first team for All-Pac-12, and was recognized as an All-American by both the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) and ESPN.

Williams was the sixth player overall to be chosen in the first round of the 2015 NFL Draft by the New York Jets.

He was the most highly picked defensive lineman from the University of Southern California (USC) since Darrell Russell in 1997. On May 8, 2015, Williams put his name on a contract worth $18.6 million over four years.

Williams was dealt to the New York Giants on October 28, 2019, in exchange for a 2020 third-round pick and a 2021 fifth-round pick. Williams forced a fumble on former teammate Ryan Fitzpatrick in Week 15’s game against the Miami Dolphins, which teammate Sean Chandler recovered during the 36-20 victory.

To free up more salary room, the Giants restructured Williams’ contract on September 6, 2022. In Week 2 against the Carolina Panthers, he suffered an MCL sprain.
