Leicester City Opinion: Foxes should offer Christian Fuchs a new deal

According to Leicester Mercury, Leicester City manager Brendan Rodgers has suggested that he will look deeper at the future of Christian Fuchs at the King Power Stadium, with the veteran set to be out-of-contract in the summer.

Fuchs signed a three-year contract with the Foxes when he joined from Schalke back in 2015 and added another year to his deal after winning the Premier League title.

The 32-year-old had expressed his desire to leave the club upon the expiry of his current contract and move back to the US to join his family. Rodgers, however, wants the former Austrian international to extend his stay. (h/t Leicester Mercury)

Fuchs came on as a substitute in Leicester’s 2-1 victory over Burnley in the Premier League last week but the veteran has mostly been used as an understudy to Ben Chilwell, who has established himself as the first-choice left-back with his consistently impressive performances this season.

The 32-year-old has made only 8 appearances in all competitions for the Foxes this season but Rodgers apparently wants him to play a role next term.

Fuchs was one of the architects behind Leicester’s Premier League victory in the 2015-16 season and also played a key role in their march to the quarterfinals of the Champions League.

ne of last standing figures of Leicester’s core of first-team stars and who tasted Premier League glory, it should be a no-brainer for the Foxes to tie him down to a new deal. He has rarely played this season but he hasn’t looked down and out when he has been called into action.

The Austrian is a calm and composed full-back with loads of experience who adds a lot of depth to Leicester’s squad. Teams need at least two players in each position to rotate their squad effectively and Fuchs certainly fits the bill.

He is still capable of contributing to both defence and attack with his well-rounded attributes, and with Ben Chilwell attracting interest from Man City after his heroics this season, the Foxes face the possibility of losing both their left-backs in the summer.

Such a situation can prove to be potentially dangerous for Leicester and Rodgers seems to know it. Leicester have no other viable options at left-back back barring Chilwell and Fuchs and the manager’s decision to extend the Austrian’s contract can be seen as a masterstroke.

Fuchs has made a total of 119 appearances for the Foxes in all competitions so far and he certainly looks good for a few more. Leicester would make a grave mistake by labelling him as a spent force at the highest level, and that said, they should try to reach a positive end on the contract talks with the player.
