Why Leeds would be wise to take a punt on Andy Rinomhota

According to a report by Football Insider (h/t Leeds Live), Championship leaders Leeds United are interested in signing Reading FC star Andy Rinomhota.

With the winter transfer window fast approaching, it is imperative for Marcelo Bielsa to make some new additions to his squad. Last season as well, Leeds were among the early pacesetters in the second-tier competition. However, after the season hit the halfway mark, the Whites’ efforts all went in vain.

Injuries and lack of form play a key role in these situations and to avoid what happened last season, Bielsa must tread cautiously this time around. And to that end, a move for Rinomhota makes sense.

At the same time, the Yorkshire giants must be aware that signing him would present a gamble of sorts. While the 22-year-old has been making giant strides in the Championship, he does lack experience.

When it comes to every other aspect though, this deal strikes all the right chords. Rinomhota’s presence often brings about a sense of balance in Reading’s midfield since both Ovie Ejaria and John Swift are more attack-oriented.

The youngster is equally adept at handling duties on both ends of the pitch, thus making him perfect for Bielsa’s style of play. Having built a high-press system at Elland Road, the Leeds boss would benefit by signing him.

Also, Rinomhota has age on his side. At 22, he has the tools needed to go on and succeed further. Under the guidance of a tactically-sound manager like Bielsa, he would have a good chance of sharpening his skills. But the fact that he is unproven in the Premier League might be a concern, especially since Leeds look well on their way to securing automatic promotion to the top-flight.

All said and done, if Rinomhota continues developing at this rate, he could potentially go on to become Mateusz Klich’s long-term successor in the middle of the park. Thus, Leeds would be wise to take a punt on the Reading star in January.
