Why Leeds United should return for Nicolas Gonzalez

According to BILD (h/t The Shields Gazette), Stuttgart are open to selling Leeds United target Nicolas Gonzalez in January. The forward was linked to Leeds in the summer as well. Now, Stuttgart are open to the idea of selling him provided their valuation of £17.8million is met.

Profile

Nicolas Gonzalez is a 22-year-old Argentine forward who plays for Bundesliga side VfB Stuttgart. A youth product of Argentinos Juniors, he joined the club back in 2005 and went on to spend 10 years there. During that time, he progressed through the youth levels.

He was handed his debut in July 2016 against Deportivo Laferrere. In the following season, he played a big part in the club’s promotion push as the club made their way to the first division. In total, he made 44 appearances for the Argentine side, scoring 11 goals and providing one assist.

In 2018, he signed for VfB Stuttgart and settled in rather well at the club. So far, he has played 66 games for the side, scoring 19 goals and assisting another nine (source – Transfermarkt). The forward has also made 4 appearances for Argentina so far, scoring once. He won the Pan American games for the Argentine Olympic team.

Gonzalez would be a valuable addition to Leeds’ attack

Leeds have been one of the better teams to watch this season after their long-awaited promotion to the Premier League. However, with each passing game, it looks like the club needs a little something more in terms of personnel. They have encountered some losses in the last few games as their attack looks a bit too dependent on Patrick Bamford.

The Englishman has shouldered the responsibility of scoring goals but at times it feels like another striker is needed at the club. Leeds did bring in Rodrigo Moreno in the summer but apart from the occasional game, he has been predominantly used as an attacking midfielder. Now with him flourishing in that role, it is unlikely he will be reverted to his preferred position.

Adding a young and prolific goalscorer like Gonzalez would be of huge help to the team and Bamford too. He has had a very good record in Germany despite suffering relegation with Stuttgart. Leeds should go ahead and sign him in January to bolster their attack.
