Leeds United Opinion: Whites should snap up Nick Powell for free

According to the Daily Star, Leeds United are weighing up a move for Wigan Athletic playmaker Nick Powell in the summer. The Whites are on the verge of ending their 15-year long absence from the Premier League and have identified the former Man United star as a potential option to bolster their attacking unit at the end of the season.

Powell is out of contract in the summer and Leeds are not the only club to have set their sights on snapping him up for free at the end of the current campaign, with The Scottish Sun reporting in January that Rangers and Celtic were also linked with the attacking midfielder.

The 25-year-old has contributed with 6 goals and 6 assists in the Championship this term, adding to the 6 goals that he scored in the league last season.

He helped Wigan secure promotion to the Championship in 2017 with a flurry of goals and assists in League One and has by far been their most productive player in the Championship for the past couple of seasons.

To put things into perspective, Leeds will need to add more depth and quality to their attack if they manage to secure promotion to the Premier League. They haven’t yet found a like-for-like replacement for Samuel Saiz and Nick Powell, with his experience of playing in the top flight for Man United and Leicester City, could prove to be a viable alternative.

Spearheaded by the prolific Kemar Roofe, Leeds have proved themselves to be a potent attacking force in the Championship but they would need more creativity in their ranks to survive in the top flight.

Despite playing a key role in the Whites’ promotion push this season, it remains to be seen whether 33-year-old Pablo Hernández manages to cope with the intensity of the Premier League. Mateusz Klich has been another of Bielsa’s trusted lieutenants in the midfield but the Pole is likely to find life a lot tougher in the top flight.

Nick Powell was tipped to achieve big things by former Man United manager Sir Alex Ferguson but his promise hasn’t quite materialized to the extent that he can be regarded as a top-quality playmaker.

He has been a bit inconsistent and lacklustre at times but he has the creativity and the vision to turn the game around on its head. Known for his quick feet and flair and quality on the ball, the Englishman has a knack of producing key passes and defence-splitting through balls in the final third.

Furthermore, he is more than capable of holding on to the ball for long enough to get involved in the build-up up play and open up the spaces for others to pull the strings.

That said, Leeds should look to beat off competition from other clubs and get their hands on the playmaker in the summer. Assuming that they get promoted to the Premier League, Powell could prove to be a make or break factor in their bid for survival in the top-flight.
