Heupel began his college football career at Weber State University in Ogden, Utah. He redshirted in 1996 and played four games as a freshman in 1997. He then transferred to Snow College in Ephraim, Utah, and became the team’s starting quarterback. While playing for Snow College, Heupel passed for 2,308 yards and 28 touchdowns. Later, he committed to the University of Oklahoma.

Following his college career, Heupel was the 177th draft pick by the Miami Dolphins in the Round 6 of the 2001 NFL Draft. He, unfortunately, failed to make the team and later was signed by the Green Bay Packers in the early 2002 offseason. However, he was released a month before training camp. He did not pursue a career in professional football afterward.

In 2004, Heupel spent the season as a graduate assistant for the University of Oklahoma. Further, in 2005, Heupel was hired as the tight ends coach at the University of Arizona.

In 2006, Heupel became the quarterbacks’ coach for the University of Oklahoma. Subsequently, on December 13, 2010, Heupel became the co-offensive coordinator at Oklahoma.

Heupel then served as assistant head coach, offensive coordinator, and quarterback coach for one season for the Utah State Aggies and as offensive coordinator and quarterback coach for two seasons for the Missouri Tigers.
