Hellickson excelled as a baseball player when he was a student at Hoover High School in Des Moines, Iowa. One of the best high school pitching prospects in the nation, he was highly respected. The Tampa Bay Rays picked Hellickson with the 118th overall choice in the fourth round of the 2005 MLB Draft. He made the decision to attend college rather than accept a contract with the organization, however.

Hellickson enrolled at the University of Iowa before returning to the MLB Draft in 2007. He was chosen by the Tampa Bay Rays once again, this time in the first round with the eighth overall selection. On August 2, 2010, Hellickson made his Major League Baseball debut for the Rays against the Minnesota Twins. Hellickson was exchanged by the Rays for two minor league prospects and sent to the Arizona Diamondbacks on November 14, 2014. In his time with the Diamondbacks in 2015, Hellickson started 27 games, finished with a 9-12 record, a 4.62 ERA, and 121 strikeouts.
