Wilson went to Elkhart High School in Texas and played football there. As a senior, he was named AP Class 2A first-team all-state after rushing for 2,749 yards and 36 touchdowns. North Texas, Louisiana-Monroe, New Mexico State, and Texas State all offered him scholarships. North Texas was his preferred college football team.
During his four-year career at North Texas, Wilson appeared in 41 games (29 starts). On 562 attempts, he rushed for 3,205 yards and 32 touchdowns while also catching 70 passes for 527 yards and two touchdowns.
