Masami Odate aka Iyo Sky is a Japanese professional wrestler and is one veteran of women’s wrestling across the world. She is a former NXT Women’s Champion as well.
She made her professional wrestling debut on 4 March 2007, alongside her older sister, with the two adopting the ring names Io and Mio Shirai, respectively (“Shirai” being Japanese for “Purple Thunder”).In their debut match, the Shirai sisters teamed with Toshie Uematsu to face the trio of Erika Ura, Nozomi Takesako and Yuri Urai.
Sky gained prominence when she started performing on World Wonder Ring Stardom where she was a former two-time Wonder of Stardom Champion, six-time Artist of Stardom Champion, two-time World of Stardom Champion, the inaugural SWA World Champion, onetime Goddess of Stardom Champion, and onetime High-Speed Champion. She was recognized as the “ace” of Stardom.
Shirai was offered a WWE contract in 2016, including a tryout at the Performance Center, but did not sign it until 2018. She appeared first in a WWE ring at the famous Ryogoku arena in Tokyo, Japan.
Shirai made her NXT debut in November 2018. Along with Kairi Sane, the Sky Pirates would make several attempts at winning the NXT Women’s Championship from Shayna Baszler. She quickly rose to the ranks and became.
She became the most badass superstar on the roster. Her popularity soared since she turned heel, and it paid off when she won her first NXT Title at Takeover: In Your House. On July 30, 2022, Shirai made her return from injury at SummerSlam alongside Bayley and Dakota Kai, with the three being allies and confronting Raw Women’s Champion Bianca Belair. Shirai was presented under the new ring name Iyo Sky and joined the Raw brand as a heel.
In the following week, the trio challenged Asuka, Belair, and Bliss for a six-woman tag team match at Clash at the Castle. At Clash at the Castle, the stable of Sky, Bayley, and Kai was named Damage Control, and they won their match.
