Manchester United Opinion: Why United should keep Ander Herrera
According to a report from the Daily Record, Manchester United midfield ace Ander Herrera has agreed a deal to join Paris Saint-Germain on a free transfer at the end of the season.
The Spaniard, 29, joined Manchester United from Athletic Bilbao in 2014 and has gone on to make 187 appearances for the club, winning the FA Cup, League Cup and the Europa League. He has established himself as a key member of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s team and has made several appearances under the new manager.
However, Herrera is out of contract at Old Trafford in the summer as United’s executive vice-chairman, Ed Woodward, chose to activate a year-long extension on the midfielder’s deal last summer instead of negotiating a new one.
And now the report claims that the Spaniard wasn’t impressed with the club’s offer of a new long-term deal and agreed a pre-contract with PSG.
A major blunder by United?
It comes as a massive surprise as to how United have allowed Herrera’s contract to wind down and now with just a couple of months left to expire, offered him a new deal which apparently he refused.
The Spanish midfielder wasn’t a regular starter under Jose Mourinho this season but since Solskjaer came in, he has improved leaps and bounds.
Known for his tenacity, energy and leadership qualities, the 29-year-old has been one of the first names on Solskjaer’s team sheet since mid-December. Herrera has been a fan favourite ever since he arrived at Old Trafford and a natural leader, someone who plays for the badge and delivers his best performances every time he takes to the pitch.
Solskjaer is expected to strengthen his squad in the summer transfer window before United’s first pre-season game on July 13 but maintaining the core of the team is an important aspect while competing for the title next season. Keeping hold of Herrera was a necessity for the Red Devils, given how the former Bilbao man has performed under the Norwegian tactician.

As things stand, however, Herrera is off to PSG in the summer going by the report, and here’s how some United fans reacted on Twitter.
No he’s average has been and always will be, not united level

Isnt loyalty a two way thing. Why are we giving smalling, young and jones new contracts while Ander’s cobtract expiring and not being renewed. If I were Ander and PSG offer me a good contract, I’m taking it too.

This is a disaster. Jones, Smalling and Rojo get renewals, but we can’t keep hold of proper leaders. Decisions makers in the club need to be held accountable, this is an utter shambles

Don’t understand
Meltdown over a passion Merchant, who’s biggest achievement was once marking Hazard out of a game.#Herrera #MUFC pic.twitter.com/FgzJB9j0RL

Not worth 200k a week. He’s a bench player. Losing him isn’t the end of the world

Not worth 200k per week, plenty of better players we could buy with that

Ander Herrera is World Class at what he does and I’m not surprised a Top Club Like PSG would go for him.
Just surprised we tie up Ashley Young & allow Ander to leave on a free.#MUFC— MUFC Snowflake (@pert1977) April 1, 2019
It’s going to be sad to see Ander Herrera go, but I agree with the club. He is not a 200k a week player – we shouldn’t match PSG.

I don’t understand my club, giving contract to smalling, young, and Jones, and not Herrera???

If it’s true, good luck to him.
United is a big club and we won’t be cowed.
He can always be replaced if he chooses to leave.— ADESINA DAVID (@ADESINADAVID) April 2, 2019
Ander Herrera to PSG on a free. Over wages. Guy was our player of the season but was not offered a new contract. Its a shame. But not totally if we manage to replace him well. Maybe we should snap up rabiot, or Neves.@hbgaladma

I enjoy watching Ander Herrera play but it he is demanding £200,000 a week when he is just inches away from 30 with no second thought I will support Man u to let him go.
Do there are reports that PSG has already showed interest on him and are ready to meet his demand pic.twitter.com/ibs08SwGMw— Pacifist (@Herleelu_usmern) April 1, 2019
So according to Duncan Castles, Ander Herrera will be joining PSG in the summer. Will I miss him? Yes. Do I think he’s worth £200k a week considering he’s almost 30 years of age? No. Do I think we can replace him? Absolutely.
