Two strikers Celtic could sign in the January window

Celtic have strengthened their hold at the top of the Scottish Premiership table and currently are 3 points ahead of arch-rivals Rangers with a game in hand.

Back-to-back victories against Motherwell and Dundee will have come as a big boost for the Hoops but that should not divert their attention from the fact that they need to reinforce the centre-forward department once the January transfer window commences.

Leigh Griffiths has taken an indefinite time out of the game to resolve some personal issues while Odsonne Edouard has also picked up an injury. Johnston did perform well in the centre-forward role but with Celtic hoping to achieve a historic hat-trick of trebles – and having achieved progression in Europe as well – they need a proper, out-and-out striker going forward in the second half of the campaign.

To that end, here are two options that Brendan Rodgers can consider to bring in once the January transfer window is open for business;

Fran Sol (Willem II)

Fran Sol 1

The 26-year-old Spanish striker plies his trade in the Dutch Eredivisie with Willem II and has been recently linked with a move to Celtic (h/t Scottish Sun). He is someone who could prove to be a worthy addition to the squad for the Hoops.

Having started his professional career at Real Madrid, Sol had brief spells at Lugo, Real Oviedo and Villarreal B sides before he made the switch to Willem II in the summer of 2016. Since moving to the Netherlands, the Spaniard has netted 46 times in 87 appearances, 16 of which have come in the ongoing campaign (19 matches).

At 26, Sol is entering the peak phase of his career and his goal-scoring rate of one per 107 minutes in the ongoing campaign is quite impressive. The Spaniard’s contract with the club is also set to expire in the summer although Willem have the option to extend it by another year. All in all, the former Real Madrid academy man seems an enticing prospect for Celtic to consider in January.

Josh Maja (Sunderland)

Josh Maja

The 19-year-old striker is making all the right noises in the English third division with the relegated Sunderland side and has been the driving force behind their promotion tilt. Maja, so far this term, has already scored 12 times in 19 matches in the EFL League One and is currently the joint second-highest goal-getter in the competition along with Ian Henderson.

Speed, technique, finishing, the Englishman has it all. And what makes Maja an even more attracting option is the fact that he is in the final year of his contract. With no signs of a new deal in place, he will be available on a bargain. The teenager certainly has the potential to be the next Moussa Dembele for Celtic and Rodgers should definitely consider the possibility of moving in on Maja in January.
