Not Liverpool – This 23-year-old Bundesliga star would be better off joining Chelsea

Why Timo Werner would be a good fit at Chelsea rather than Liverpool

According to a report from Evening Standard, Chelsea and Liverpool are set to battle each other for the signing of Timo Werner.

Werner, 23, has been in scintillating form for RB Leipzig ever since he moved from Stuttgart in the summer of 2016. Currently into his fourth season at the club, the German has scored 86 times in 140 appearances and has further set up 37.

He has also established himself as Germany’s first-choice striker in the past few years and seems to be getting better with each game. This season, he has scored 20 goals in 18 Bundesliga games, with two of them coming recently against Union Berlin.

He has been a vital member in Julien Nagelsmann’s squad this season as Leipzig stay on top of the league table with the hope of clinching their first-ever Bundesliga title. Meanwhile, Evening Standard has reported that Werner recently expressed his desire of playing in the Premier League while speaking to German newspaper Bild.

However, Jurgen Klopp’s men have been undefeated in the top-flight this season and look likely to claim the Premier League title by the end of the season.

Speaking of attacking ranks, the Reds have been quick to address the shortcomings in their frontline and have signed Takumi Minamino from RB Salzburg. The Japanese international has joined an already powerful attacking system consisting of Sadio Mane, Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah.

In addition, they also have Divock Origi and Xherdan Shaqiri, who have done their best in bit-part roles and have covered well in the absence of the first-choice forwards. Therefore, signing Werner would make very little sense for the Anfield outfit after having already made a good signing in Minamino.

On the other hand, the Blues have continued to struggle without a proper backup to support Tammy Abraham up front. Olivier Giroud and Michy Batshuayi have not been convincing so far this term. This has prompted Frank Lampard to stick with Abraham.

Despite starting well, Chelsea look to have lost track and their recent 1-0 loss to Newcastle highlighted the desperate need of reinforcement to their attacking ranks. An experienced centre-forward would be an ideal solution for the side which has lacked enough goals.

Thus, signing Timo Werner would make sense for Chelsea. He is capable of walking straight into Lampard’s squad and this move could also benefit Abraham, who has been playing week in and week out.

The Germany international has proven to be one of the most lethal strikers in the Bundesliga over the past four years. He is considered to be one of the most sought-after players in Europe and the Premier League could be an ideal destination for him to develop himself.

Verdict

A closer look at both sides clearly indicates that Chelsea are in need of a striker who could sort out their goalscoring difficulties and lead them in every game alongside the young Englishman. Therefore, the Blues must beat off competition from their rivals Liverpool and lure the German to Stamford Bridge.
