Tottenham Opinion: Why Spurs should avoid signing Nolito from Sevilla?

According to a report from Spanish news outlet Fichaejes, Tottenham are considering a move for Sevilla winger Nolito in the summer.

Since returning back to Spain in 2017 from a disastrous spell in the Premier League with Manchester City, Nolito has failed to lighten up Sevilla consistently. He has endured an injury-hit campaign in Seville, managing just three league appearances under Pablo Machin, who was sacked earlier this month.

The Spanish winger is currently out injured and even if he recovers quickly, there are no guarantees that the new Sevilla manager will hand him regular opportunities. That leaves Nolito’s future at Sevilla up in the air but the main question arises—should Tottenham sign the 32-year-old in the summer transfer window?

Nolito Sevilla

Tottenham must spend heavily in the summer transfer market after failing to add a single player in the past two transfer windows. Mauricio Pochettino’s side have slipped out of the title and exited the FA Cup last month, meaning the Champions League stands as their only hope of winning a trophy this season.

Regardless of what happens this season, Pochettino should address the issues within his squad. A central midfielder and a striker as a back-up to Harry Kane has to be on the Spurs manager’s priority list. Any plans for signing Nolito should be avoided as Tottenham already are filled with exciting attack talents.

In Lucas Moura, Christian Eriksen, Son Heung-min, Dele Alli and Erik Lamela, Spurs have enough firepower in their attack. Add the talismanic Kane to the list and Pochettino’s side really become one of the most exciting sides across Europe. That’s one of the reasons why Pochettino should not make a move for Nolito, who hasn’t set the world alight in two seasons at Sevilla.

Secondly, the Spaniard failed to cope with the demands of the Premier League and left Manchester City after just a season in English football. His performances at City were hugely underwhelming and Pep Guardiola decided to offload him in the summer of 2017.

Furthermore, the Spanish international will turn 33 in October and signing a player on the decline doesn’t make any sense at all for Spurs.

Verdict

Pochettino has to spend shrewdly in the summer to build a squad capable of realistically challenging for the title in the 2019/20 campaign. The addition of Nolito would not solve Spurs’ problems and hence, Pochettino should stay away from the ex-Manchester City winger.
