The inaugural Brazilian Grand Prix was held in 1972 but it was a non-championship race. Argentina’s Carlos Reutemann won the race, representing Brabham-Ford. Swedish driver Ronnie Peterson finished second on the podium while Brazilian Wilson Fittipaldi occupied third place.

The first ever F1 World Championship race of the Brazilian GP took place in 1973. It was won by local favourite Emerson Fittipaldi. Jackie Stewart finished in second position, driving a Tyrrell while Denny Hulme finished in third position, driving a McLaren.
