“I can’t believe it” – Kevin Magnussen’s P5 finish leaves Gunther Steiner spellbound

The Haas F1 Team Principal is elated with Magnussen’s emphatic comeback to F1 at the Bahrain Grand Prix

Kevin Magnussen was nowhere close to Formula 1 a couple of weeks back. Magnussen had not driven an F1 car since 2020 – his previous stint with Haas. Fast forward to 2022, Magnussen is not just racing in F1 but has given his team their fifth ever top 5 finish in a Grand Prix. No wonder, team principal Gunther Steiner is on cloud nine.

Steiner was short of words when asked to speak after the race. “It’s just fantastic, I can’t say more but it’s all down to the team. Kevin did a fantastic job, for him to make a come back like this he would not have dreamt of, but things happen in life – a month ago it was a completely different scenario and now all of a sudden we are fifth”, said an elated Steiner.

Steiner’s delight was clearly understandable in the team’s intercom conversation. “I can’t believe it, that’s a Viking comeback”, screamed Steiner as Magnussen approached the finish line with a historic 5th place finish in his grasp.

Gunther Steiner feels things can only get better for Magnussen

Gunther Steiner signed up Magnussen as a replacement for Nikita Mazepin, a fortnight ago after the Russian was sacked following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. The Haas Principal believes there are better things to come from Magnussen.

“I think he came back in good form but I would say I’m honestly convinced that there’s more to come. You cannot sit on these F1 cars and be at 100 percent straight away. It’s not going to happen so there will be more to come”, said Steiner. He further added, “I’m very optimistic looking forward for the whole team. With Mick (Schumacher), he will learn to fight now at this level, which is different than what he was last year and Kevin will up his game because he just gets in the tune again.”

Magnussen is definitely happy to make a comeback to F1 for a team he knows inside out. The Danish driver had earlier said, “I was obviously very surprised but equally very excited to receive the call from Haas F1 team.”

Kevin Magnussen and Haas would be aiming for consistency and look to carry this momentum forward to the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix next week.
