Everton Opinion: Why the Toffees should sign Callum Wilson this summer?

According to a report from the Sun, Everton have joined the race to sign Bournemouth striker Callum Wilson this summer, with Chelsea, Leicester City and West Ham United also keen.

Having scored 11 goals and contributed six assists in the Premier League this season, Callum Wilson, 27, is rated at £40m by Bournemouth, adds the report. Not only has the 27-year-old been clinical in front of goal, but his understanding with teammate Joshua King has made them one of the most deadly duos in the Premier League.

The England international’s stock has understandably gone up this season and Everton will have to battle hard against the aforementioned Premier League clubs to lure him to Goodison Park in the summer.

For now, Everton manager Marco Silva will have to continue with the forwards at his disposal as the Toffees look to push for a top seven finish in the Premier League.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin has performed admirably well in attack in recent weeks, leading the Everton attack. The 22-year-old has shown a lot of promise but he’s too young to be relied upon for an entire season.

Cardiff City signed Oumar Niasse from Everton on loan until the end of the season in January, with an option to make the move permanent. Niasse could potentially leave Goodison Park at the end of the season, as Silva will look to cut the losses on the Senegalese and invest the money in buying a centre-forward.

Cenk Tosun has struggled big time in Merseyside after joining from Besiktas last January, managing just three goals in 25 games in all competitions across 2018/19 and has fallen behind Richarlison and Dominic Calvert-Lewin in Silva’s plans.

The Turkish international has found goals and playing time increasingly hard to come by and just like Niasse, should be offloaded this summer.

By doing so, Silva should bring in a prolific goal-scorer ahead of next season, given Everton’s issues in the final third this term. Callum Wilson will be a brilliant fit at the Goodison Park, owing to his style of play, profile and most importantly, the ability to find the back of the net on a regular basis.

Wilson will finally give Silva’s men a focal point in attack, whilst bringing a much-needed physicality to the team. The Englishman is speedy, athletic and intelligent as well as fantastic in the air and has the strength to outmuscle defenders.

He is adept at working the channels in the final third with his quick and incisive passing and has a good eye for goal, making him the perfect fit for Silva’s system at Everton.

The 27-year-old, however, has had injury problems in the past and this season as well but when fit, he is one of the most lethal centre-forwards in the league.

Verdict

A ruthless finisher in front of goal, the former Coventry man could form a potent attack involving Gylfi Sigurdsson, Bernard and Richarlison. Wilson is one of the Premier League’s most exciting strikers and could be real coup for Everton if Silva manages to sign him.
