Everton Opinion: Patrik Schick can work wonders for the Toffees
According to claims from Italian outlet Tuttomercatoweb, Everton are set to fight it out with Bundesliga club RB Leipzig for Roma striker Patrik Schick in the summer.
The same report claims that Roma want to get the 23-year-old Czech Republic international off their books just months after making his loan deal from Sampdoria permanent.
The Giallorossi splashed a club-record fee to sign him permanently but they are apparently not satisfied with Schick, who has scored only 5 goals in all competitions this season.
A youth product of Czech club Sparta Prague, Schick joined Sampdoria in 2016 and immediately rose to prominence in the Serie A, registering 11 goals and 3 assists in his debut season. His wonderful breakthrough season prompted Roma to acquire his services on loan in 2017 with an obligation to buy, but things have gone downhill for the promising striker ever since.
Tuttomercatoweb reports that Roma would still ask for a fee of around £20.5 million to part ways with Schick, while the Serie A giants might also be interested in looking to ship him out on loan to another club with an obligation to buy.
Meanwhile, Everton would need to look for attacking reinforcements in the summer, with a replacement for the likes of Cenk Tosun and Oumar Niasse at centre-forward believed to be high on Marco Silva’s wishlist.
The Toffees have lacked a powerful presence up front, and even if they consider youngster Dominic Calvert-Lewin good enough to deliver the goods consistently, they would need to invest heavily to bring in another promising young striker.
With the likes of Richarlison, Bernard and Theo Walcott in the ranks at Goodison Park, Everton already have plenty of pace in their attack but they need a strong and powerful presence in the final third to hold up the ball and link up with the pacy wingers.
To put things into perspective, Patrik Schick has all the attributes that would make him a good fit for Silva’s system at Everton.
Standing at 6ft.1 inch with a towering frame, Schick is known as a strong, powerful, fast and agile centre-forward, who is also capable of dropping down to play in a No.10 role.
More of an old-school forward, Schick uses his physicality to hold on to the ball with his back to the goal, allowing the wingers to make runs in behind the opposition’s backline and get involved in the build-up play.
Blessed with a good understanding of the game and a wonderful eye for picking out key passes, Schick uses short and quick exchanges to link up with his teammates, often playing as a target man to improve cohesion in the final third.
To add to that, the 23-year-old also has decent pace and relies on his instincts to make runs into the six-yard box to put away chances. Furthermore, Schick is a technically-gifted centre-forward who has the ability to work the angles to perfection and is also very strong in the air, making him a potent threat from set-pieces.
Schick’s presence would certainly be a massive boost for Everton as it would allow the more pacey players like Richarlison, Bernard and Walcott to play off his shoulder. He might have gone through a lean patch this season but the youngster can propel Everton to greater heights in the Premier League provided Silva manages to extract the best out of him.

The Toffees would look like a much more complete attacking unit with the Czech Republic international in their side, and that said, they should fend off competition from other teams to get their hands on the promising centre-forward.
