Everton Opinion: Why the Toffees should sign Swansea’s Mike van der Hoorn

Everton have been hugely inconsistent this season under Marco Silva. Despite spending big in the summer transfer window, the Toffees sit 11th in the table and could miss out a place in the Europa League next season.

Silva’s team are unpredictable; they can lose to Newcastle United on one day and defeat Chelsea on the other. That’s how the Merseysiders have been all this season but next summer will prove to be an even bigger test for the Portuguese tactician and he’ll have to be smart in the next transfer window.

There are a few areas that needs addressing if the Toffees are to improve next season. Everton’s defence has been all over the place this campaign, with Silva’s men leaking goals for fun.

That should be Silva’s biggest concern and considering that the likes of Phil Jagielka and Kurt Zouma won’t be a part of the team in the 2019/20 campaign, the Portuguese manager has some serious planning to do from now on.

Marco Silva

Losing Zouma and out of contract Jagielka will be big blows for the Merseyside outfit but it won’t be the end of the world, as with time and confidence, Michael Keane has stepped up and proven himself this season.

He’ll likely be a permanent fixture in Everton’s backline but the Englishman needs a reliable player to partner him. Yerry Mina hasn’t done enough to justify a regular berth, leaving Everton in need of a dependable centre-half next season.

That being said, the Toffees should make a summer swoop for Swansea City star, Mike van der Hoorn.

The Dutch defender has been a rock at the back for Swansea City in the Championship but the south Wales side are likely to miss out on a play-off spot.

Mike van der Hoorn is out of contract in the summer but his deal is said to contain a one-year extension in the club’s favour; however, the club’s parachute payments are dropping by the year and it may be the Welsh outfit’s best interests to let go off the 26-year-old this summer.

Mike Van Der Hoorn

Van der Hoorn has been one of the consistent defenders in the Championship this term, excelling for the Swans with his strength, power, ball-playing abilities and leadership qualities.

Formerly of Ajax, it hasn’t been a surprise to see the Dutchman play out from the back with such ease and poise in the Championship. His aerial ability combined with his decision-making and positional awareness would make him an asset for Everton’s leaky backline.

Verdict

The Toffees would need a leader at the back following Jagielka’s departure. Van der Hoorn will be a fantastic fit at the Goodison Park and on a potentially free transfer, it’s a move Silva has to make especially if Everton are to have any chance of qualifying for Europe.
