Why Everton should go all out to sign Zlatan Ibrahimovic

Everton are interested in signing Zlatan Ibrahimovic in the January transfer window, as per the Sun. The former Manchester United star left LA Galaxy in November and is keen to return to European football (h/t Sun).

Everton have struggled to find a prolific scorer so far this season, with Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Moise Kean failing to score regularly. And as a result, Everton have now identified Ibrahimovic as the man who could be a potential short-term solution to their problems.

The 38-year-old has scored 31 goals in as many games for LA Galaxy in the MLS, which proves that he still has the quality to hit the back of the net.

The Toffees reportedly want to add Zlatan to their struggling squad, paying him around £3.4million-per-year on a short-term deal until the end of the season. The contract may also include a clause allowing it to be extended by another year, running to June 2021.

It seemed as if the Premier League had already been treated to their helping of Ibrahimovic during his 21-month stay at Manchester United but now, he could return with Everton.

Everton are struggling in the Premier League. They had even entered the relegation zone after their 5-2 loss at the hands of rivals Liverpool. Following the result, head coach Marco Silva was sacked and Duncan Ferguson was appointed as the interim manager. Under him, they managed to win 3-1 against Chelsea.

Silva, who took charge in May 2018, won 24 and lost 24 of his 60 games in charge. In the Premier League, Everton lost more than 50% of their points under him. He had a meagre win percentage of 35.9% which is the least when compared to the club’s last five managers.

Although Ferguson has a win under his belt already, it remains to be seen as to who takes up the managerial hot seat.

Regardless, the Toffees have struggled in the league and have failed to replace Romelu Lukaku. The attackers they signed post the Belgian’s departure have not made an impact. Moise Kean has struggled to get going after his move from Juventus in summer.

Meanwhile, Zlatan is available for nothing, having left MLS outfit LA Galaxy last month. He scored a remarkable 53 goals in 58 games for the American club. Ibrahimovic’s only previous spell in England came when he netted 29 times in 53 outings for Manchester United in the 2016/17 and 2017/18 campaigns.

Everton have struggled to find a reliable source of goals in their team this season, barring adaptable forward Richarlison. The Brazilian attacker is not a No. 9 but the club’s other options have failed to establish themselves as prolific centre-forwards.

Verdict

Everton have made a disastrous start to the season and have already sacked Marco Silva. But they are fighting at the wrong end of the table. If not for the win against Chelsea, the Merseysiders would be in the bottom three.

Signing Ibrahimovic is exactly what is needed for the club and players. Even if the towering Swede would only be a short-term signing, there’s no doubt that he remains a top-class talent after a hugely successful spell in the MLS. Thus, Everton must sign him.
