Everton Opinion: Toffees should plot an audacious swoop for Salomon Rondon

According to the Daily Star, Everton are planning to bring Salomon Rondon to Goodison Park in the summer, with the Toffees looking to steal the West Brom man from under the noses of Newcastle United.

Rondon, who joined Newcastle on loan from West Brom at the start of the season, has impressed as the focal point of Rafael Benitez’s attack, with his 9 goals and 5 assists from 25 appearances proving pivotal to the club’s resurgence in the Premier League.

The Magpies looked set for a disastrous campaign with a winless streak of 11 games at the start of the season but the 30-year-old Venezuelan international has emerged as the saviour for Rafael Benitez.

Daily Mail claims that Newcastle would have to stump up £16 million to make Rondon’s stay permanent but it remains to be seen whether owner Mike Ashley is really interested in striking a deal for the 30-year-old hitman.

Now that Everton has entered the race to sign Rondon in the summer, the pressure will be on Newcastle to make a decision on his future.

While missing out on the chance to sign Rondon permanently would be a big loss for Newcastle, Everton can certainly bag a massive coup if they manage to nab the prolific striker. Rondon has been in terrific form this season and Everton should look at him as a potential option to answer their prayers.

The lack of a prolific striker to spearhead the attack has been one of the major reasons behind Everton’s lacklustre campaign in the Premier League this season.

Cenk Tosun’s failure to adapt to the Premier League forced Silva to use Richarlison in a No.9 role before youngster Dominic Calvert-Lewin came to Everton’s rescue. Richarlison is at his best when he plays out wide on the left as it allows him to use his pace and power to exploit the gaps in the wide areas.

Calvert-Lewin has chipped in with some valuable goals but Everton still need a target man up front to allow Silva to build his attack around him and Rondon is very much capable of operating as the focal point of the forward line.

Rondon, with his ability to hold on to the ball and link up with his teammates, certainly fits the bill at Goodison Park. He is a striker who relies on the quality of the supply lines and the likes of Richarlison, Gylfi Sigurdsson and Bernard in the ranks should provide him with plenty of joy.

Excellent in the air and fast across the ground, Rondon will provide Everton with a dominating presence inside the box, whilst his quality on the ball and wonderful goal scoring ability from direct set-pieces should prove to be added assets to the Toffees.

Given that Rondon is going to turn 30 next season, Everton might give this move a second thought but the Venezuelan still has enough gas left in his tank to answer the club’s prayers for a prolific centre-forward.

The Toffees have failed to find an ideal replacement for Romelu Lukaku since his departure to Man United a couple of seasons back, and Rondon, though not as prolific as the Belgian, could prove to be a handy bargain signing for the club.
