In a recent interview with the Los Angeles Times, Drew Barrymore bravely shared her personal struggles with post-divorce drinking.

She spoke openly about all it took to snap out of her alcoholism after going through a tough breakup with Will Kopelman in 2016. While her separation from her ex-partner has been agonizing, the separation from being an alcoholic has been “one of the most liberating things in my journey of life,” pens Barrymore herself in an essay.

The journey to her amazing landmark was even more difficult after her decade-long relationship with the psychoanalyst, Barry Michels to work on her addiction ended. “He just said, ‘I can’t do this anymore,'”

Barrymore recalls. It was really about my drinking. I said, ‘I get it. I’ve never respected you more. You see I’m not getting better. And I hope, one day, that I can earn your trust back.‘” Barrymore still attributes a large part of her struggle to the choices she made being guided by her therapist which led her to a better place.

But you’ve got two healthy kids, a fantastic career and incredible friends.’ And sometimes you have to be reminded of that,” recollects Chris telling Barrymore while pushing her to snap out of the horrific habit.

The Drew Barrymore Show along with all the support brought a guiding light for Barrymore as she started overcoming her habitual alcohol consumption. “I think the opportunity at a show like this really hit me,” she shares looking back to 2019. “I was like, ‘I can’t handle this unless I’m in a really clear place.'”

Her experiences have often been heard and read, but she admits considering it an achievement for herself, especially as she figured out her boundaries and her rhythms in the long game.
